The Xbox brand wants to be even greener and will bet on being more ecological in the coming years. In an industry where equipment is renewed every five years or even less, the environment must be taken into account. Fortunately, the digital format reduces the environmental impact and Microsoft is very aware of it with Game Pass and its Store. But, now they want to go a step further and be 100% recyclable by 2030.
Xbox wants to be even greener
Microsoft has announced that it is committed to making Xbox consoles are fully recyclable by 2030. The commitment comes through the Xbox Corporate Vice President of Operations, Dave McCarthy. McCarthy stated in part: “At Microsoft – and, by extension, Xbox – we have made ambitious commitments to significantly reduce the company’s environmental impact and operate as a carbon-negative, water-positive, zero-waste company by 2030.”
An interesting fact is that currently, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are 97% recyclable. This data comes from the UL (Underwriter’s Laboratories) environmental claim validation procedure.
However, the Xbox team does not seem content with this, as the consoles have undergone more improvements geared towards sustainability. For example, the 2021 system update introduced improvements in energy saving mode which made it even more efficient and added the ability to download game and system updates in power saving mode.
Also last year, they were implemented for the first time the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) resins for some of the S Series casesas well as for certain internal parts, and also on Xbox controllers.
Xbox is already 97% recyclable and aspires to 100%
It is to be appreciated that it is not just banal talk and that some companies are seriously committed to sustainability. On March 10, the company published its Environmental Sustainability Report 2021describing the progress made towards reduce the company’s global carbon footprint and eliminate waste. What does this mean for Xbox users? On the subject of gaming, McCarthy had this to say: “While games bring joy to gamers, we also recognize that games have an impact on the environment. Our commitment to our players and the industry is to work tirelessly to reduce that impact responsibly and consistent with Microsoft’s corporate commitments.”
