We know that COVID-19 is a highly communicable disease of the upper respiratory system that is spread when someone inhales a droplet expelled by an infected person.

Tears and COVID-19?

However, with the virus mutating and evolving, there are still many unsolved mysteries about the transmission of the new strain of the SARS-COV-2 virus.

While there have always been speculative studies about a possible means of spreading the virus through body fluids, more recent studies have hinted that it might actually be possible. One such study, conducted by the Government Medical College in Amritsar, found that the tears of COVID-infected patients have the potential to transmit the virus to a healthy person.

RESULTS OF THE STUDIES

Viral transmission through bodily fluids has always been a long shot. According to new research, experts have discovered that from a certain sample database collected and analyzed for COVID transmission. About 17.5 percent were transmitted through tears.

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of virus in the tears of infected patients even if they did not present any ocular manifestation.

A similar study, published in the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, revealed that infectious viruses can be present in tears with or without ocular involvement.

Ophthalmologists have to be careful …

Based on these new findings, experts have also suggested that there may be a newer means of transmitting COVID to be wary of, and opticians, ophthalmologists, and people who work in personal care sectors like salons and estheticians may have a greater risk of infection through fluid secreted from the eyes.

How can tear drops act as carriers of the virus?

Experts suggest that the clear tissue that covers the white area of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid may be infected with viruses associated with the common cold and herpes.

This happens because the eyes are directly exposed when to the droplets that are produced when coughing, sneezing or talking. Also, most people have a habit of rubbing and touching their eyes. This can be a valid explanation for the presence of coronavirus in the tears of an infected person.

* Touching your eyes after touching a surface with a virus can increase the risk of infection.

Coronavirus can be spread through the eyes in the same way that it is spread through respiratory droplets. Touching the tears of an infected person or touching the surface where the drop has fallen makes them prone to infection. Even touching your eyes after touching a surface with a virus can increase the risk of infection.

Although conjunctivitis (red eyes) is a prominent symptom of COVID-19 infection, it is rare. Not all people infected with the virus develop this symptom, so it is necessary to protect yourself. Even if the infected person does not have pink eyes, they can transmit the virus to a healthy person.

Now it is proven that the coronavirus can be transmitted to the other person through tearsHowever, studies also suggest that the risk of transmission is extremely low. The best thing you can do in such a case is to practice some healthy hygiene methods to keep your patients safe.

Here are some small steps you can take to reduce your risk:

 1. Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or the inside of your elbow when coughing or sneezing.

 2. Do not rub your eyes when you are infected with COVID-19.

 3. If you are using a tissue when sneezing, throw it away immediately.

 4. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 30 seconds after touching any surface and before touching your face or eating.

 5. If soap and water are not available, wash your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 70 percent alcohol.

 6. Avoid close contact with sick people.

 7. Wearing a mask in public places and when around people who do not live in the same household.
