In a year characterized by the absence of large hailstorms, wind episodes and other meteorological accidents – which last season caused a reduction in the harvest – the producers of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Poma de Girona foresee a good harvest this year , with more than 84,500 tons, 16% more than in the previous season.

This is how the harvest of the earliest apple varieties has started and will last until November. The mild temperatures and relatively dry periods of the last few months will also allow the picking of a higher quality apple, larger in size, with more color and sweeter.

The harvest of Poma de Girona

If the forecasts are fulfilled, the PGI Poma de Girona – made up of producers from the areas of Gironès, Baix Empordà and Alt Empordà – will this year have one of the best apple harvests in recent years. The more than 84,580 tons that producers expect to harvest represent a considerable increase compared to last year’s figures, which closed with a production of 72,680 tons, and those of 2018 and 2017, when just over 77,539 tons and 79,300 were harvested. tons, respectively, according to data from the Catalan Fruit Business Association (Afrucat). Even so this year, however, it will not be possible to reach the record of 87,100 tons that were collected in 2019.

In this sense, the forecast is that all the varieties grown in the demarcation will increase their production, especially in the case of the Fuji variety, which will have an increase of 32%. By volume harvested, one more year the Golden will lead production with 26,820 tons, followed by the Gala (21,570 tons) and, further afield, the Granny Smith (12,240 tons), the red varieties (7,950 tons) and the Cripps Pink ( 6,620 tons).

Frigola believes that “in the future there will be more varieties, apples will be tastier, with different flavors, the market will expand and consumption will increase. Now, I think that now we have to make an effort to buy the product of our territory and bet on sustainability, it pains me to see how supermarkets sell apples that come from Poland, Portugal, South Africa or Chile “, says Llorenç Frigola, president of Poma de Girona.
