The earthquakeslike the one that occurred this Monday, cannot be predicted, but what we can anticipate is our response to any earthquake, which includes having prepared -permanently- an emergency suitcase or backpack that must contain, in addition to a first-aid kit first aid, copies of our documents.

Based on the experiences of the people who lost their properties in the earthquakes of 2017 and 1985, which also occurred on September 19, to avoid mishaps it is recommended to scan the documents first, save them in pdf format on the computer and on a USB stick, the latter should be kept in the emergency suitcase.

Documents you should have ready in an earthquake

Also, preventing that memory from suffering any damage, it is worthwhile to also include the printed copies of the following documents, which must be kept in the suitcase or backpack in an envelope or a plastic container:

  • INE credential

  • Driver’s license

  • Passport

  • Birth Certificate (yours and your family’s)

  • Marriage certificate

  • Medical Expenses Insurance Policy (if you have this service)

  • Card with your IMSS or ISSSTE Number, or the public medical service you normally attend

  • Property Insurance Policy (if you have it contracted)

  • Professional title or Certificate of studies

  • professional license

  • Proof of address (electricity, water, predial)

  • Deeds of your property (if you are an owner)

  • Lease agreement (if you rent)

  • A statement of your credit and debit cards

  • A list of emergency telephone numbers, relatives, the banks where you have accounts, and the private insurance you have contracted

  • Copy of your will (if you have already done so)

Remember that when a property is damaged by an earthquake it is very difficult to access it again, this is what happened to dozens of people in Mexico City in 2017, finding themselves suddenly, unfortunately, without any identification document.

For this reason, it is also recommended that you save important documents in the event of an earthquake, scanned on several USB sticks, one of these will go in the emergency backpack suitcase, and the others, for example, can be kept at the home of a relative or friend of yours. your entire trust. The latter is to prevent inconveniences in case you are not in your home at the time of an earthquake.

    Backpack or emergency suitcase

Now, as for the emergency suitcase or backpack, in addition to the documents that we have already indicated, in accordance with the majority of the Civil Protection recommendations, it must contain:

    • First aid kit

    • Bottled water

    • battery powered flashlight

    • battery operated radio

    • batteries

    • Non-perishable food cans (tuna, sardines, etc.)

    • personal hygiene items

    • Lighter or matches

    • a whistle

    • Copy of your house keys

    • Medicines (painkillers and those that you usually consume)

    • Milk cans in case you have children

Periodically, at least twice a year, you should check the backpack, check that the batteries are in good condition, and verify that the food and medicines have not expired.

At the time of an earthquake, if you are at home, you must leave it carrying the emergency backpack, so it must always be in an accessible place, close to the exit door of your house.

If you need more details on how to make your emergency backpack, you can consult this website of the Mexican government: https://www.gob.mx/profeco/documentos/mochila-de-emergencia-y-botiquin-de-primeros-auxilios ?state=published

Similarly, you can implement a Civil Protection plan in your home, following these instructions:
