British developer rare was a prolific game developer for Nintendo in the late 1990s. This team was responsible for such classics as the Donkey Kong Country trilogy for the Super Nintendo, and the successful Nintendo 64 title GoldenEye.

After a deal to buy the studio by Nintendo fell through in the early 00s, microsoft stepped in and acquired the team and its exclusive catalog of intellectual properties. In 2015, the compilation “Rare Replay” for Xbox One, which took 30 years of the rich history that the original Twycross company had created and introduced them to a new audience, becoming a fan favorite.

Seven years later, microsoft seems interested in reviving some of the most unique games created by the studio. Well the American giant has recently renewed the trademarks of two of Rare’s IPs in the Global Brand Database, after years of inactivity. Blast Corps was released in 1997 for the N64 and while it fell short of the sales of other N64 classics like Banjo Kazooie, the game is fondly remembered by fans for its over-the-top destruction.

long live pinata was released in 2006 for Xbox 360 and was a very different game, essentially a first person farming simulator with very cute animals, which was a success and spawned multiple sequels.

It should be clarified that it is normal for a company to protect its intellectual properties by renewing and creating trademarks, although this does not always mean a new delivery of the games in the short term. Ahead of the 25th anniversary celebrations, Square Enix registered two new Final Fantasy VII trademarks for “Labyrinth Striker” and “Final Bar Line”, which have yet to materialize.

However, it is interesting to note that microsoft has decided to renew both brands of games created by rareeven though they both appear on the Rare Replay compilation.

Given the rare continues to support the popular Sea of Thieves and develop its next original IP, Everwild, it seems unlikely that the studio will have any input into any possible future releases. Everwild was originally announced in 2020, but little is currently known about the magical co-op adventure.
