Within the framework of the commemoration of Women’s Day, Expansión organized the online panel called: “Automotive industry: leadership strategies to overcome the challenges 2022”; where Regina Granados, CEO of LeasePlan; Mónica García, director of Purchasing and Supply Chain of General Motors; Esther Salinas, Director of Development of Distributors and Production Planning of Lexus, and Elisa María Crespo, Executive President of Clúster Automotriz State of Mexico.

Faced with the first question, how have companies dealt with interruptions in the supply of inputs? The guests highlighted, among the most important actions, that the first thing was to put customers at the center of everything, in addition to taking care of employees and their families, as well as maintaining an internal organization at all times.

“Depending on the needs of our clients, we propose solutions, that is, if they want to wait (we anticipate and plan), however, if they urgently need to start up new fleets, we give them immediate options. Of course, we seek to strengthen alliances with all our suppliers, since the objective is customer service and mobility,” Granados said.

How has the auto industry adapted?

Crespo indicated: “the main function that we have had during these two years of pandemic has been to implement the protocols so that Mexican manufacturing could produce parts and components.”

He said that the objective of a cluster is to link the value chain in a region and that the State of Mexico is precisely one of the most important manufacturing areas in the country. Consequently, the pandemic made visible the great strength that Mexico has in terms of vehicle production, as well as its parts and components. But at the same time, he highlighted the great vulnerability generated by the dependence on suppliers that are not found in the region.

Nobody taught us how to manage a pandemic, but the first thing was to safeguard our people by taking them to lockdown, then we worked on internal plans, as well as with suppliers to understand how to help each other to add and continue to put at the center our clients.

At General Motors, they have implemented different strategies to try to mitigate or minimize the impacts, so that they can maintain their operations, including reducing the impact on their customers. To achieve this, García commented “it has been essential to maintain constant, clear, direct and open communication with the teams at all levels, to ensure that they have the confidence to promote their ideas, innovate and raise their hands.”
