Crime does not rest and the strategies of fraudsters are increasingly sophisticated. Hand in hand with the advancement of technology, criminals are also updating their methods in order to trick the unsuspecting and steal money from them.
Although there are still cases of phishing through emails with fake links, the new strategy is based on calling by phone, posing as bank employees and, after instructing customers to download a couple of applications on their phones, they empty your accounts.
According to reports from Citizen Council for Security and Justice Mexico Cityto which he had access The universalcriminals now ask to download banking and remote control apps from smartphones.
Once they do, access to the accounts is a very simple step.
An example reflected by El Universal has to do with a BBVA customer who was called to tell him that the bank had detected a purchase on Amazon that they understood he had not made.
In the call, they told him that they wanted to verify the operation.
The 65-year-old client never imagined that the caller was not a bank employee and he complied with everything that was asked of him: download the Quick Support and BBVA Send apps on his smartphone. The argument they used: better protect your account and prevent further unauthorized purchases.
Of course, if the client had had an account at another bank (Santander, Citibanamex, Banco Azteca), they would have been asked to download the app from another institution.
They use Quick Support and BBVA Send to empty accounts with a phone call
The two apps they used are completely legal. One allows a user to remotely take control of another phone (Quick Support) and the other is used to send money to other accounts.
They also told him not to use the bank’s app for a couple of days because it was going to be under maintenance.
In short: they emptied the account (15 thousand pesos in the case of this victim).
According to data from the complaints received by the Citizen Council, 7 out of 10 fraud attempts registered as phishing are carried out under the argument of analyzing unrecognized purchases in electronic stores.
The second argument used by criminals in this kind of false calls is to impersonate airline employees.
Between 2020 and 2021, complaints to the Citizen Council for Security and Justice in Mexico City for fraud attempts classified as phishing grew by 63.3 percent.
