In Mexico, only 1.2 percent of the total population (an estimated 429,701 people) considers themselves to be from the “high class” or “wealthy.”
According to the 2020 National Household Income and Expenditure Survey (ENIGH), 1 percent of the total population has a monthly salary of 108,652 pesos.
In Mexico, between 2018 and 2020, the population in poverty increased by up to 7.3 percent, going from 51.9 to 55.7 million inhabitants.
This era of hyperconnectivity has allowed characters like “I am Mirrey” to enjoy a good reputation thanks to their content, and it is this tiktoker who, as part of his work as a creator, went to Bodega Aurrerá and with 500 pesos tried to buy some products from the basic basket.
At this point, it is no longer a secret that the pandemic revealed that a large number of Mexicans live from day to day, a fact that, although it is nothing new, did have a greater impact during the most worrying period of the health emergency.
That said, in general terms, Mexico is a country of few rich or even millionaires. Taking into account the data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) and its study Quantifying the Middle Class in Mexico 2010-2022, only 1.2 percent of the total population (an estimated 429,701 people) is considered to be of the “upper class” or “wealthy”.
In this context, an important fact to point out is that, today, a very small number of Mexicans have a salary that exceeds 100,000 pesos per month. In fact, according to information from the National Survey of Household Income and Expenses (ENIGH) of 2020, 1 percent of the total population has a monthly salary of 108 thousand 652 pesos.
Now, on the other hand, we are talking about the fact that in Mexico there is a large population that lives in poverty and the same in extreme poverty. Coneval information notes that In Mexico, between 2018 and 2020, the population living in poverty increased by up to 7.3 percent, going from 51.9 to 55.7 million inhabitantswhile the population in extreme poverty generated an increase of 24.1 percent, from 8.7 to 10.8 million
Taking the latter into account, we are talking about a significant number of Mexicans living from day to day, a fact that, as we already mentioned, became even more evident after the arrival of the pandemic.
With 500 pesos, “millionaire” goes to Bodega Aurrerá and this is his “basic basket”
This 2023, as is already in the public domain, Mexico, along with other Latin American countries, announced an increase in the minimum wage for workers, going from 172 pesos a day (about 8.6 dollars) to 207 pesos (that is, about 10.35 dollars), this according to the National Commission of Minimum Wages (CONASAMI).
What’s this all about? On TikTok, a content creator has taken advantage of the trend of these topics in order to develop ideas for his videos and, of course, in order to add likes and followers.
We are talking about “I am Mirrey”, who, now, decided to go to a branch of Bodega Aurrerá and, with 500 pesos, make her basic basket; He ended up spending 315 pesos, according to what his video shows, and this is what he bought:
@soymirrey I tried to buy the Basic basket?#ammirrey
In the end, the products he bought were given as gifts to “someone who needs them the most”, according to what he expresses in his content; However, what is striking is the fact that this type of content is beginning to be recurring, which shows that, beyond the “good intentions” it may have, it is a well-thought-out strategy to add clicks, likes and followers.
And it is that, if we base ourselves on the comments that these content creators receive, the truth is that it is a good positioning strategy.
