During the last weeks a rumor began to circulate about the possible launch of a Seagate 512GB expansion card for Xbox Series X | S. The information, which was born after a discovery of the portal XboxSquad.fr, today was reinforced with a leak from the United States. And is that some stores in the North American country already have advertising for said product ready.
According to Windows CentralMicrosoft could kick off the ad campaign as early as next week. Therefore, the official announcement is a matter of days. For the moment, yes, we still do not know its price. Regarding its design, the unit will not make any changes with respect to the 1 TB variant, which has been available on the market since the launch of the Xbox Series X | S (November 2020).
Unlike the PlayStation 5, which allows the use of NVMe PCI 4.0 drives from different manufacturers, Microsoft preferred to bet on a proposal of proprietary storage. It is worth mentioning, however, that the experience of using the Seagate expansion card is more friendly to the common user. And it is that it is enough to connect the unit to the back of the Xbox Series X | S. With the PS5, however, it is required to remove a side case and screw in the SSD.
In terms of prices, both options remain in a very similar range at the moment. Of course, the fact that several manufacturers compete With each other to win over users who want to expand the storage of the PS5, it also means offering the best possible price. So it’s only a matter of time before NVMe PCI 4.0 drives start to drop in price.
Launching a 512GB expansion card is of course aimed at adjust to the economic possibilities of more consumers. The price of the 1TB drive, which still stands at $ 220 / Euro, is a figure that not everyone is willing to pay. So launching a lower priced proposition is sure to have a good reception in the market. Especially among those Xbox Series S owners who have already run out of space.
