In the animation technique stop motion, Guillermo del Toro has found a powerful tool to tell stories. The proof of this is in his most recent adaptation of pinocchio, a project that took him many years to build. With the good comments that the public and critics had about his film, many people were excited hoping that the director of the scarlet summit (2015) will return to frame-by-frame animation for his next film.
Perhaps this emotion was what caused the December 1 Collider released a note mentioning that, as part of an interview with indiewire, Del Toro revealed that he planned to make one of his most anticipated films supported by the same technique. Is about In the mountains of madnessrecognized and acclaimed Lovecraftian story that the Guadalajara filmmaker has famously struggled for years to film, because, although he already has the idea developed, other things have gotten in his way, in addition to the fact that he has made some rewrites of his original script.
The original note says that, as part of the chat with indiewire, the filmmaker stated that he had previously spoken with Phil Tippett, an animator and special effects expert with whom he maintains a great friendship, about the possibility of adapting this story as a frame-by-frame animation. These were his words:
«I said that it would be ideal to do ‘The mountains of madness’ as stop motion. You see animation in a more compelling way than live action. It’s almost a hypnotic act, and the relationship with the story becomes more intimate that way.”
If the quote is analyzed well, the creative never says verbatim that he is already planning to make the film. He rather mentions, very, very casually, that if he did it, it would be ideal to take that path. Nothing more. However, many international media quickly replicated the information from Collider and they assumed that the director had already formally announced that this would be his next film.
Given this, taking advantage of his constant activity on social networks, Del Toro was quick to appease the rumor, declaring that he is not yet ready to start production. Specifically, he did so by responding to a tweet from Steven Weintraub, Editor-in-Chief of the site that broke the news at the beginning.
I don’t, really- just a pull quote they did. But it would be nice… https://t.co/GfGY9j2P30

“Actually, I don’t plan to do it,” he said. “It is only an extract that they put. But it would be nice…”
Later, Weintraub told him that he would like him to make the film one day, and this was his response:
I will keep you posted! We try every time- and then, one day… they happen (but most days they don’t) 😉

Recently, in addition to promoting pinocchio in stop motion, Guillermo del Toro posted a CGI test from almost 10 years ago, used to see what his version of In the mountains of madness. You can see the clip HERE.
