In an interview with La Jornada, the undersecretary of prevention and health promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, said that in Mexico minors will be vaccinated against COVID-19. As long as they are cases where minors are at risk of developing serious disease.
Which minors will be given the vaccine?
Even the Ministry of Health already has a kind of census and revealed that it is estimated that these vaccines will be applied to just under a million minors.
Minors will be those who have any of the following diseases or conditions:
- Cancer
- Renal insufficiency
- Liver failure
- Advanced HIV infection
In addition, the undersecretary said that minors with some disabilities and congenital diseases will be vaccinated, although he did not say what the specific cases will be.
There is still no scientific or official consensus
However, the undersecretary emphasized that “there is no scientific consensus at this time” on the usefulness of vaccines in children and adolescents who do not have comorbidities.
“There is no evidence that it is necessary or significantly useful to vaccinate healthy minors (…). What we are proposing today may change tomorrow, if it changes there is scientific evidence, not commercial pressure or propaganda, which suggests that it is convenient, we have no limitation whatsoever in doing so. ”- Undersecretary Hugo López-Gatell
What does the FDA say about vaccinating minors?
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He asked parents not to seek vaccinations for their children under 12 years old, yet.
The institution emphasized that children “are not little adults” and that parents should wait for the FDA to complete the research and approval process for vaccines for children between the ages of 5 and 12.
The BioNTech-Pfizer case
Recently, BioNTech-Pfizer announced that they are seeking approval for the vaccine for children in virtually the entire world. This coincides with the return to school in major cities in the United States, amid the spread of the Delta variant across the country.
The FDA, through Dr. Peter Marks, said in an interview released by abc News that approval is a matter of weeks and revealed that according to clinical trials. The immune response in children aged 12 to 15 years was better than that seen in children aged 16 and over.
So they are very hopeful that the vaccine for children ages 5 to 12 also works very well.
However, Marks said her strongest advice to parents is not to seek to give children adult vaccines and asked for time for the FDA to better assess the correct and safe dose for their children.
