The surprise death of Chadwick Boseman marked a before and after for the MCU. His death occurred in full pre-production of Black Panther 2which is why some fans considered the possibility of a recall for the iconic king T’Challa. The decision was complicated, but Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, left to honor Boseman’s memory and decided to continue the film. without an actor to replace him.
A few weeks before the premiere of Wakanda Forever, the long-awaited sequel, Feige finally clarified the reasons that led him to make that decision. And it was not easy to choose what to do with the second part of one of the most successful tapes of the MCU. Here his words for Empire.
“It felt like it was too early for a recall. Stan Lee always said that Marvel represents the world outside your window. And we had talked about how as extraordinary and fantastic as our characters and stories are, there is a human and relatable element in everything we do. The world is still processing the loss of Chad. And Ryan (Coogler) poured that into the story.”
After that decision, Ryan Coogler (director of the film) and Kevin Feige began to figure out how to integrate all the elements of the sequel. Since there was no recast, Boseman’s death is likely to become T’Challa’s death. And derived from it, someone should have the new title of Black panther. Everything indicates that it was shuri (Letitia Wright).
“The conversations were entirely about what we would do next. How could Chadwick’s legacy continue, and what he had done to help Wakanda and Black Panther become these incredible, aspirational, iconic ideas? That’s what it was all about,” Feige concluded.
Was it a good or bad decision to continue? Black Panther 2 without a recall? Soon we will know the answer, because the film will hit theaters in Mexico next November 10. Will it achieve the same critical and commercial success as its predecessor?
