What is the origin of Nutella and who invented it?
The story begins in 1946 with Pietro Ferreroa pastry chef Sunrise located in Piedmont (Italy). After the Second World War, the nation was experiencing a shortage of cocoa supplies.
In this sense, Ferrero had the creativity and knowledge necessary to create a recipe called giandujot —name inspired by a famous character from the region— and thus face the tree crisis.
It was a sweet paste made from sugar, a minimum amount of cocoa and hazelnuts, among other seasonings. Initially it was presented in the form of a stick —like butter— so that it could be sliced and spread on bread.
In 1951, Pietro began to sell the product under the name of Giandujot SuperCream and through your company: ferrero. In 1963, his son continued with the business and decided to expand the hazelnut spread to the entire European continent under a new name: Nutella.
Michele Ferrero chose the English word nutwhich means hazelnut, and the Latin suffix she. He also modified the composition of the recipe so that it was marketed in a jar. This is how the famous pasta was renewed and went on the market with a new name on April 20, 1964.
In 1966, the iconic bottle arrived in France and in 1978 in Australia, sparking the opening of its first plant outside of Europe, in Lithgow, near Sydney. The rest is history. There is even an official Nutella day since 2007 and it is February 5.
