Ever since Chris Pratt was announced as the voice of Mario Bros. in the film adaptation, the news has been received with much suspicion. The voices of those who defended the character’s Italian personality, and those who were detractors of the actor because of his political stances and ideologies, were raised. However, the final nail in Pratt’s coffin was when his work was first heard in the first trailer.
From there we have experienced a spiral of memes, complaints and requests. Some that seek to remove the actor from the cast; and others that make comparisons between dubbing actors from other territories, who, according to the public, do a better job than Pratt himself.
Despite the complaints Super Mario Bros continues unscathed. With his plan to reach the big screen without any kind of delay or change, now the directors of the film refer to the controversy. While chatting with the magazine total films (via) explained why they think Chris Pratt was the right choice. They even reckon skeptics will be silenced once the movie hits theaters.
“To us, it made a lot of sense,” co-director Aaron Horvath said of casting Pratt. “He’s really good at playing a blue-collar hero with a lot of heart. The way Mario is characterized in our movie, he’s perfect for that.”
And it is that both Horvath and his partner in the direction, Michael Jelenic, affirm that this is their own version of the character. Although Nintendo has kept a close eye on every aspect of the film, the script could basically be considered an origin story.
“It’s the story of Mario becoming Super Mario,” Horvath explained. “When you play, if you don’t give up, Mario wins. So we brought that player experience from the video game to a feature that Mario will have in the movie.”
Super Mario Bros overall it has a dream cast. In addition to Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy will play Princess Peach; Charlie Day the famous Luigi; Seth Rogen will play Donkey Kong; Jack Black is Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key will be Toad; and Sebastián Maniscalco will give voice to Spike.
It will hit theaters on April 5 of this year. You can find out all the details of the animated tape by clicking here.
