- Apple is preparing to launch its mixed reality headset at WWDC.
- These headphones are expected to be powerful and feature 4K resolution displays.
- Apple seeks to replicate its success by taking an existing technology and bringing it to the masses through its product and marketing strategy.
This Monday, June 5, it is speculated that Apple would announce its first new line of major devices since it introduced the Apple Watch, back in 2014.
It is about your virtual reality (VR) headsets, a class of products that since they began to be presented have never been able to conquer large audiences. On the contrary, they have disappointed. Will Apple be able to change this?
There is hope: Apple is adept at taking a technology and bringing it to mass audiences thanks to top-of-the-line product and marketing strategies.
Indeed, this Monday, at the Apple developer conference, the famous WWDCTim Cook’s company is expected to launch its first mixed reality headset.
These headphones, according to various US media reports, will feature high-definition screens, but could also allow users to see and interact with the real world through full-power cameras mounted on the device, something that has been called: mixed reality.
Will Apple be able to achieve what it couldn’t (so far) goal? When Facebook changed its name in 2021, it decided to focus on virtual reality and the metaverse. However, the sale of its VR headset was not what was expected. In fact, they fell and the “explosion” of the metaverse that Mark Zuckerberg spoke of never happened.
In parallel, augmented reality (AR), a technology that is related to VR that displays computer graphics through specialized and expensive clear glasses, also failed to catch on.
Both Hololens, from Microsoft, and Magic Leap, two companies in this market segment, are not having a good time.
It is not known exactly what Apple will present, but there is talk of a more powerful mixed reality headset than what exists, with 4K resolution screens for each eye and powerful chips designed by the Cupertino brand.
They would be expensive, very expensive: about $3,000.
Apple’s presentation will take place a few days after Zuckerberg presented in a post on Instagram what his next mixed reality headset will be like, the Quest 3, as we published this Thursday in Merca2.0.
Will Apple Marketing Do It Again With VR?
In general, Apple does not invent products. Their most successful strategy is to take ideas that already exist, refine them, and make them massive.
An example is the iPod. Before its launch, there were several MP3 players, but Apple’s project was the one that changed the market.
Before the iPhone was released, Blackberry had merged a wireless cellular Internet connection and a pocket computer, and other companies were developing smartphones based on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile system.
When Apple introduced the Apple Watch, there were several smartwatches on the market.
Will it achieve the same with mixed headphones? We will know very soon.
