We have all seen a Coppel store, which is dedicated to selling appliances, footwear, clothing, furniture, toys, motorcycles, among other items.
Coppel stores are popular throughout Mexico for offering affordable prices and having the possibility of paying in installments. However, who is behind the success of this business?
Coppel’s history
The history of the Coppel Stores dates back to 1941, when Luis Coppel Rivas decided, along with his son Enrique Coppel Tamayo, to move from Mazatlan to Culiacan, Sinaloa to establish a little store called The gift, and that over time he ended up selling radios and watches.
After the Second World War, customers did not have the liquidity to buy in cash, so the desire to obtain credit arose in them. So, Don Luis Coppel and his son, Enrique, made the decision to invest all their saved capital to sell furniture on credit in comfortable weekly installments.
In this sense, relying on the customer’s word turns ElGIFT into a furniture store with a credit system, and it is precisely when it adopts the name of Coppel: the way customers called it. Over time, new product lines were introduced, including the clothing area.
The rest is a story of work and dedication based on solid principles, such as simplicity, trust and dialogue with the client.

Coppel notes on his website.
Who is the owner of Coppel?
As is the name of the company, the founder is Enrique Coppel-Tamayo, a businessman from Culiacán.
Apart from a department store, Coppel has other services such as an Afore, a bank called BanCoppel (where people can send money nationwide and to the United States) and with credit to purchase products in stores.
Mexico has around 1,253 branches distributed in the 32 states of the Republic. Jalisco and the State of Mexico are the entities with the largest number of these stores.
