It tells the story that was invented by the Englishman John Montagu, IV Earl of Sandwich, beyond 1762.
It was said that this British statesman was fond of the game. As the story goes, in 1762, during a 24-hour betting streak, he instructed a cook to prepare his food in such a way that it did not interfere with his game.
“What would you like?” asked the servant. “Bring us bacon, egg and butter layered inside an Egyptian bread , “ the count ordered.
When he saw the sandwich, his guests asked him what it was, and Montagu proudly replied: “It’s an invention of mine and it’s called a sandwich.”
In fact, Montague was not the inventor of the sandwich; rather, during his excursions in the Eastern Mediterranean, he saw grilled pita bread and small canapés and sandwiches served by Greeks and Turks during their mezes (appetizer selection), and copied the concept for their convenience.
However, there is no doubt that the Count of Sandwich made this type of light meal popular with the nobility of England, and in this way, its title has been associated with the sandwich since then.
The concept is extremely simple: delicate food is served between two slices of bread in a culinary practice of ancient origins between the Greeks and other Mediterranean peoples.
Sandwich is a city in the non-metropolitan district of Dover, in the ceremonial county of Kent, in the southeast of England.
Sandwich, dinner accessory
Sandwich recipes did not come immediately in the cookbooks. Why? In England they were (at first) considered restaurant food.
In America? Many colonial chefs in the last half of the 18th century were not especially fond of imitating British culinary trends.
When viewed in the historical context, it is understandable why Americans did not start calling their bread and meat combinations “sandwiches” until [long after the Revolution and War of 1812] at the end of the 1830s.
The main difference between the first English and American sandwiches? In England, beef was the meat of choice; In America it was ham.
