Posadas began to be celebrated in our country after the Spanish conquest. However, the Mexicas had a similar tradition: they celebrated the arrival of Huitzilopochtli in Panquetzaliztli (month of December).
During the festival of prehispanic cultureswhich began at the beginning of the month and lasted 20 days, flags were placed on fruit trees and banners in the main temple.
Upon the arrival of the Spanish, they imposed what is also known as “Christmas bonus masses“. Biblical passages were read in them and representations alluding to the Jesus birthwhat is known as pastorelas.
When do the 2022 Christmas posadas start?
Christmas posadas are held from December 16 to December 24, when New Year’s Eve is celebrated.
In many places in Mexico, the residents of neighborhoods, towns and municipalities organize themselves to celebrate the posadas traditionally: pilgrims reading the litany book; lit candles while they go through several houses until they find those who give them “posada”.
During these festivities there is an abundance of piñatas filled with sweets and/or seasonal fruits, sparklers, snacks, as well as punch with hawthorn, guava, apple and cane.

In total, nine Christmas posadas are carried out that prepare the entire ritual for Christmas night. Although the festivities refer to family life, its true meaning arises from the Catholic religion.
With the Christmas posadas, the aim is to symbolize the pilgrimage that Mary and Joseph made to Bethlehem, the place where the Virgin gave birth to the baby Jesus.
