WhatsApp multi-device support is already in the testing phase. However, it is not the only novelty that is on the way for the world’s most popular messaging service. In recent weeks, WABetaInfo announced that users will soon have the opportunity to create encrypted backups and store them in the cloud. Well, the beta of this function also started for a limited number of users on Android.
Why is it important to have encrypted backups? Currently, WhatsApp offers end-to-end encryption when sending messages. That is, the text of your chats is safe. The problem is that the backups that we usually keep on platforms such as iCloud and Google Drive, are not protected with such a level of security.
If we move the above to a real example, it is possible that the authorities, if necessary, request an order to inspect the messages stored in the backup without too much complication. On the contrary, if said backup is encrypted, we would certainly go back to the debate whether technology should make it easier for a legal institution to bypass this security system to fulfill a specific purpose. An investigation, for example.
WhatsApp won’t force you to use encrypted backups, apparently …
Perhaps the most interesting point of the WhatsApp proposal is that it is a fully independent backrest to which you can create today. Users, it seems, will not be forced to use the protected backup, although WhatsApp will dedicate efforts in communication – an activity that it is not good at lately – to publicize the benefits of using it.
Unfortunately, at this time we do not know when encrypted backups will be available to the public. However, if you have the interest to try them before anyone else, you can register at WhatsApp beta program. Please note that this novelty is only available on Android devices – about its availability on iOS there is still no information.
