As users of WhatsAppthe most popular instant messaging application on the planet, it is more than likely that on some occasion we have seen ourselves in this complicated scenario.
Where we send a message that is of extreme personal importance to us, whether for emotional or professional reasons.
But the recipient has deactivated the double blue check function that indirectly validates and notifies not only the receipt, but also the reading of the message.
In some cases, our level of intensity and desperation in trying to know that this message has been read, without resorting to the simple act of asking directly by means other than WhatsApp, leads us to commit some unexpected acts.
For example, downloading third-party apps that promise to notify us of the read receipt, when in reality all they do is be intrusive with our privacy and metadata.
But this situation has also given rise to other curious cases where urban legends can be generated about solutions that do not exist.
The story of how to check message reading on WhatsApp that is not so true
Recently in Latin America it has begun to go viral a supposed method to verify that any WhatsApp recipient has read the received messages, even if they have the blue double check function deactivated.
The published procedure varies depending on the source, but they more or less indicate the same steps to obtain this verification without the need to download third-party APKs:
- Login to WhatsApp.
- Go to the conversation of interest where the blue double check was deactivated.
- Then click on the message that has been sent.
- If it is a message in a WhatsApp group, you must click on the three dots in the upper corner.
- If it is a private conversation directly after clicking on the message, you have to tap on the “Information” button that appears above.
- When doing so, a status menu will be seen where it will give the exact time of delivery of the message and under the reading section we will see the double blue check followed by a long hyphen. Something like that:
The urban legend factor here is that for some reason the idea began to go viral that the appearance of that long script represented that the message had been read without detailing the exact time it happened.
But the reality is that the hyphen appears there representing that the recipient has disabled the read receipt function.
The most practical way to verify this is to run the experiment with two devices, each with its own WhatsApp account.
