Key facts:
Animoca Brands is the technology company that designed The SandBox metaverse.
The project would be powered by apecoin, the BAYC cryptocurrency.
Enigmatic. This is how the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), one of the largest collections of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the market, has long been called. As if confirming this characteristic, they advanced a jump “to the other side” as early as April. What will it be about?
On Twitter, the technology company Yuga Labs, the creator of this famous collection, public an animated video, accompanied by a short message: “See you on the other side in April.” This rocked social media in anticipation of a new adventure of bored monkeys (Spanish translation of “bored ape”).
In the production, it all starts with a bored monkey sitting outside his cabin. While he is fishing, he comes across a bottle that says “DRINK ME”. Upon ingesting it, everything around him begins to destroy itself. A volcano on the horizon erupts and everything is transformed into apparent chaos. background music, Break On Through (To The Other Side)from The Doors.
Another character, who appears reflected in the bottle, appears in the scene and takes the bored monkey “to the other side”. Along the way, they come across a spaceship with members of other NFT collections inside, including the Mutant Ape Yacht Club, World of Women, CryptoPunks, Cool Cats, Meebits, and Nouns.
The video, 1 minute and 34 seconds long, allows assumptions to be made about the new project they are up to. At first glance, it could be a metaverse that, as they themselves pointed out, is driven by its currency, the apecoin, which was released this weekcasually.
In fact, the narrative of a digital world created by the BAYC gains relevance when learning that Animoca Brands, a company dedicated to the design of games and that has its eyes fixed on the metaverses, acquired the apecoin and advancement “secret plans” from the hand of Yuga Labs.
It is worth noting that Animoca is also a reference for being behind The Sandbox, one of the first metaverses to be created and where there are already several well-known brands and people participating, such as the rapper Snoop Dogg or the electronic music producer Deadmau5.
However, it is also likely that a video game based on the bored monkeys is in development, considering that Animoca Brands has been behind several PC installments. What’s more, has been involved in the digital game business for about four years.
Apecoin, promoter token of the project
As mentioned at the beginning, the new project in the hands of the BAYC is being developed hand in hand with apecoin, the token launched by the collection with which they promise to promote a circular economy and games.
After its launch, several play-to-earn game developers were favorable towards the BAYC cryptocurrency, which served to increase its price.
However, and with just three days on the market, the new cryptocurrency is operating in the red. It drags falls of 16% compared to the price of yesterday, March 19, and is trading on USD 11.39, according to the prices of CoinMarketCap.
The arrival of the coin was announced by CriptoNoticias months ago. As expected, the token was airdropped to BAYC members and can now be traded on decentralized exchanges.
If BAYC were to carry out a project in the metaverses, it would not be the first time they had a presence there. In the past they had interaction with Web3 and this newspaper has reviewed it.
For example, it became known when the company 10:22 PM formed the virtual band KINGSHIP, made up of bored monkeys. It was inspired by Gorillaz, one of the biggest alternative music groups of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
In addition, the BAYC was the driving force for Adidas, the German sportswear company, to also jump into the metaverses, this time The Sandbox. In a video, several BAYC monkeys were seen arriving wearing the garments of that reference company for the sport.
Now we just have to wait. There are only a few days left until April begins and the step to the “other side” that the BAYC will take will be seen.
