What is Skull & Bones about? Here we tell you

In 2013, Ubisoft Singapore, a studio that until now had been in charge of supplying other projects of the company and its international divisions, took on the task of creating a pirate game inspired by the navigation mechanics that Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag introduced us. However, with each passing year, it was clear that something was not quite right with this project. Now, after nine years in development, the Asian studio is finally ready to show the public what it has been working on all this time.

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a presentation ahead of time, where I was able to see a little of the gameplay and the structure that it will have. Skull & Bones when it hits the market next November. To begin, we must make a very important point clear, the Ubisoft Singapore project is a game as a service. That’s right, we have a Destiny or a Marvel’s Avengers in our hands. Fortunately, the developers have made it clear that it is possible to enjoy the entire experience on your own, although this is still a title with a focus on multiplayer, both PvP and PvE.

Here, you’ll get the chance to start out as a simple nobody, someone who doesn’t even have a real ship to sail across the Indian Ocean. However, as you complete missions and your reputation, or infamy, in this case, increases, you will be able to get a large crew, a huge ship, and the title of the greatest pirate of this age will be within your grasp. Of course, this is more said than done.

The sea is full of dangers. Not only do you have to worry about the weather and other players trying to bring you down, but even your crew can go on a mutiny. So you have to take into consideration all the necessary sections to cross the ocean safely. Before each mission you will be able to visit a pirate lair, where it is possible to access more content, customize your main character, buy necessary resources to survive on the high seas, such as food and drinks for all your companions. Once you decide to embark on your adventure, you have a number of different options at your disposal.

To increase your level of infamy, it will be necessary to be quite a pirate. This is how you can attack other ships that you find in the ocean, each one with a series of resources, benefits and risks. As if this were not enough, there are also raids against large forts that you can attack in different ways. In addition to the classic cannons, your ship can be customized with different offensive and defensive attachments. For example, you can equip Greek fire for close range attacks, use harpoons to sink your opponent faster, or put metal on the bow to lessen the damage you take. Ubisoft Singapore has made it clear that customization is a very important element.

Although everything I have told you sounds very simple, the idea of fighting only using your ship sounds very interesting, and could attract more than one player interested in this experience. Although the experience that arrives on day one will be complete, the developers have promised updates with more content in the future, and best of all, they will be free.

In fact, Skull & Bones It doesn’t look like a bad game, but it also doesn’t look like something that would genuinely make a hit these days. The market for games as a service is very competitive, and very few manage to get off the ground. Ubisoft Singapore’s work features interesting combat, but only that. There’s no genuinely flashy, and considering Ubisoft Singapore spent nine years or more developing this, the consequences for filing a bug are likely to be dire.

The entire experience took place in an open world, or open ocean, in this case. So you can find resources and create different items through a crafting system. If the repeat loop isn’t fun, Skull & Bones You will have a serious problem on your hands. Skull & Bones It will arrive on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S and PC on November 8, 2022.
