In the Moon Knight comics, Marc Spector has up to three known personalities, and in the series so far we’ve only met two. But all the signs point to the fact that we will soon meet her. (Spoiler alert)
One of the main mysteries of the Marvel Studios series that airs on Disney +, moon knight, are the different personalities of its protagonist. So far, the series has focused on two: Marc Spector and Steven Grant. However, in the comics, Spector has a third personality (of four main ones): taxi driver Jake Lockley.
There have been several clues pointing to its existence throughout the four episodes of the series. The first one came in the first episode, “The Goldfish Problem”. In it, Steven Grant is bewildered to learn that he has asked a co-worker at the museum out on a date; Since Marc has a crush on Layla, it doesn’t make much sense for him to be the one trying to date someone else.
The second came, in episode 3, “A friendly guy”, Marc loses control of his body and wakes up discovering that he has killed two people he was following. Horrified, he asks Steven what he had done, to which Grant replies that he hadn’t. Later, in episode 4, “Tomb”Shortly after Spector woke up in the asylum, and tried to escape from it, he found a sarcophagus with Steven locked inside. However, as they made their way down the hall together, they passed a room with another sarcophagus that was shaking violently, and in which Jake Lockley is probably trapped.
Who is Jake Lockley and what role does he play in the Moon Knight mythology?
At the beginning of the comics moon knight, Marc Spector did not have dissociative identity disorder (DID). However, he created two other aliases to function as Moon Knight, Jake Lockley and Steven Grant. The latter was a successful businessman who financed Spector’s crime-fighting, while Jake Lockley was his ear. As a taxi driver operating in the seedy underworld of New York, Jake allowed Marc to be close to the criminal element without risking his true identity.
It was later established in the comics that Marc had TID and that his aliases were actually alternate personalities. As part of this new interpretation, Steve Grant was introduced to Marc as a young child, and Jake Lockley appeared during his teenage years at a time when Marc’s family was concerned about his mental state, so his appearance led to his parents to commit him to a psychiatric institution.
The taxi driver has always been Marc’s gruff personality. He’s not afraid to get his hands dirty and, as mentioned, knows the criminal underworld. In the pages of 1982’s Moon Knight #15, the character’s co-creator, Doug Moench, wrote a section explaining the world of Marc Spector titled “The Shades of Moon Knight”in which he described Lockley as follows:
“I see Lockley as the man Moon Knight feels most comfortable with: no real pretensions or responsibilities, always on the go, always in contact with people on an easy, down-to-earth level. In fact, Lockley is closest to Spector, his true identity, yet he lacks Spector’s guilt and sternness and possesses the capacity for humor and absurdity.”
