Rumors about the installation of the plant began in October of last year, after Musk’s visit to Nuevo León.
On February 14, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard thanked Rohan Patel, the company’s Business Development Director, as well as Eugenio Grandio, Market Director, for the visit. “There will be more good news soon,” he said then.
Days ago, the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García, said in an interview with several local media that Musk’s investment in the state was confirmed, for which he would give the official announcement days later.
The water argument
Last week, López Obrador asserted that Nuevo León is going through a difficult time in terms of water supply, for which reason he would deny permission to the automobile manufacturer to establish itself in said border state.
“If there is no water, no. There would be no possibility. Permits are simply not issued for that. It is not feasible,” he said in his morning conference last Friday.
After the president’s statements, other states, including Michoacán, raised their hands to welcome the Tesla plant.
Currently, the company has different factories located in Shanghai, China; Berlin, Germany, in addition to Texas, Nevada and California, in the United States.
IP alerts turn on
The dispute over the Tesla plant begins to worry the private initiative in Mexico.
The Confederation of Industrial Chambers (Concamin) pointed out that Tesla is the one who will define the region where it should be installed, stressing that the country must provide as much information and certainty in the process, mainly due to the economic dynamism and jobs that it would generate.
“The support of the Federal Government for the installation of the company, as well as the correct promotion of the state governments interested in taking the automotive plant to their territories, should help Tesla to be sure that the best place to invest is Mexico” , added the agency.
