What is it and how to prevent it

Acne is a skin problem that affects many people at some point in their lives to a greater or lesser extent. Conventional acne treatments can be very expensive and often cause secondary negative problems such as irritation, redness, or dryness.

Acne is generated when the skin removes a large amount of sebum, and this is trapped in the skin pores. These skin pores become inflamed and cause acne, and although their formation depends on genetic factors, hormonal changes, infections and stress, it also depends on diet, but what foods are related to acne?

The truth is that there are two main groups of foods that are capable of promoting the appearance of acne. One of them is dairy and foods with a high glycemic index.

It has been seen that, above all, two types of dairy in particular, favor the appearance of acne. On the one hand, cured cheeses, and on the other, skim milk. This is because both of these foods contain hormone precursors that are involved in the formation of acne. But this does not happen with yogurt, since the fermentation that occurs in it, reduces the chances that we suffer from acne.


As we have commented previously, high glycemic index foods They are those that cause a rapid increase in our blood glucose, that is, they rapidly increase blood glucose. These are refined grains or cereals, sugary foods and drinks, honey, white bread, watermelon, banana or dates, among many others. These foods are also capable of causing an increase in the incidence of acne.

Another important fact is that diets high in foods with complex carbohydrates instead of simple carbohydrates, cause less severity in acne.

It has also been seen that people with acne generally have lower levels of zinc in their blood than those people who do not suffer from it. We can increase our zinc intake if we consume foods such as oysters, oats, or animal products in general.

EPA and DHA are two omega 3 fatty acids that we are interested in consuming if we want to act against acne. EPA can control sebum production and maintain adequate hydration, both of which are capable of reducing inflammatory factors. These are found in salmon, anchovies, walnuts, or chia.


A very common question is whether chocolate causes acne. The truth is dark chocolate, with a high percentage of cocoa, does not have to aggravate acne. In fact, it is believed that the antioxidants it contains may even help reduce the risk of risk. Milk chocolate will make this problem worse, so we should avoid it.

Therefore, although hygiene, hormonal situation, genetics, infections and stress influence, it is advisable that if we suffer from acne, we avoid skim milk, aged cheese and glycemic index foods.

Instead, we should focus on including more protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. It is also important to increase the amount of zinc and omega 3 fatty acids.
