One theory speculates that, at a previous moment, Wanda already said “No more mutants” and that explains why we don’t see them in the MCU.
The CBR site picks up an interesting theory from Shrakakoom’s Reddit according to which it is possible that the MCU we know is the world resulting from Wanda Maximoff uttering “No More Mutants” at a previous point. . For this reason, we would not have seen the mutants in the Marvel Studios cinema, which would be fixed in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
As such, the theory states that “What if… we find out that the MCU as we’ve seen it is an altered version since Wanda cast a spell to get rid of mutants. We didn’t know because we’ve been looking at the alternate timeline all this time.”
He then goes on to explain how this would be corrected in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: “Our first contact with the X-Men is as antagonists. They try to return the world to its original state, but from the perspective of the film they are multiversal anomalies. As events unfold, we discover the truth that they are trying to put things back where they belonged. Wanda finally undoes the spell, reinserting the characters (Wolverine, Beast, Cyclops, etc.) into major events that have already happened on screen, fixing the MCU.”
In other words, the MCU as we know it would be a version of the world of House of M and in Doctor Strange 2 we would see the restoration of the previous reality, with the mutants reintegrated and the memories returned.
Enriching the theory
To this theory, CBR columnist Nicholas Brooks adds a number of interesting facts. The author recalls the flashback from WandaVision in which it was learned that Wanda and Pietro survived the bombing of their house due to Wanda’s magic.
“This could mean that her natural connection to magic is tied to her mutation. If mutants played a role in Sokovia or in her life, she may have altered her reality after experiencing intense emotions. This is evidenced later when he creates the Hex in WandaVision after Vision’s death. As a result, the Mind Stone would not have granted him the powers, but instead awakened his mutation and showed him a magical destiny.”
The author ends by speculating that this would also explain the presence of Ralph Bohner in WandaVision. This would be a flashback to the previous world, and Evan Peters being the real Pietro all along.
And yet, by bringing mutants back, it would also revive anti-mutant sentiment.
Is it possible that the theory that Wanda said “No more mutants” at an earlier point in the MCU will come true?
Although it would be a good way to integrate mutants into the continuity of the MCU, the truth is that Marvel Studios would hardly allow its main universe to become a kind of Universe B or “alternative”, because it would financially devalue it.
But, despite the unlikely chance of it becoming canon, this theory that Wanda said “No more mutants” at some point prior to the MCU is pretty interesting. At least deserves a What If…?
Finally, and as a mere anecdote, in 2016, Elizabeth Olsen recorded a video explaining the origin of Scarlet Witch for Allure magazine. If you want to see the MCU’s Wanda saying the classic phrase “No more mutants”, take a look at the 2:25 minute of the clip.
