With his appearance at the last Grammy Awards, Ben Affleck captured the attention of many people, although for reasons contrary to the usual ones: far from focusing on his outfit or on an interview given on the red carpet, which attracted attention of countless viewers and users of social networks was the expressionless face that the actor kept for much of the ceremony, which made people think that perhaps he was not enjoying the evening at all.
“Ben Affleck”:
Because he was having fun in the #GRAMMYs.pic.twitter.com/uzhrzOrVT6— Why is it Trend? (@porktendencia) February 6, 2023
From numerous screenshots centered on his sad face, a lot of memes emerged imagining Affleck and his possible thoughts in those moments, but what was really happening that night? He himself has responded during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote his new project as a director, Air: The story behind the logo.
Spoiler alert: there was nothing out of place. No anger or early boredom. Just a subject quietly enjoying good music and the company of his wife Jennifer López, who, in the words of the actor, was at a “work event.”
Ben Affleck reacts to that night at the Grammys
“I had a good time at the Grammys. My wife was going to go and I thought: ‘Well, there will be good music. It could be fun’. At film award galas, it’s sound mixing speeches and webinars. But I thought this would be fun. I saw host Trevor Noah walk up and I was like, ‘Oh, gosh.’ They were framing us in that shot, but I didn’t know they were shooting. I leaned over to her and said, ‘As soon as they start filming, I’m going to step away from you and leave you sitting next to Trevor.’ And she said, ‘You better not go.’ That’s a husband and wife thing. I mean, I ask him, ‘Okay, who is this act?’ I am not up to date. My wife is up to date, obviously. And yes, it’s your wife’s work event.”
In addition, he acknowledged that during this ceremony many people thought he was drunk, a fact that was far from reality. Affleck has been very honest about his past history of alcoholism, which, in his view, has changed the perception of him, both in the industry and in the outside world.
«I have gone to events and I have been angry. And I’ve been bored. I’ve been to awards galas and gotten really drunk. No one ever said that he was drunk. [Pero en los Grammys] They said, ‘He’s drunk.’ And I thought that’s interesting. That raises another question about whether or not it’s wise to acknowledge addiction, because there’s a lot of compassion, but there’s still tremendous stigma, which is often quite inhibiting. I think it discourages people from improving their lives.”
What was your reaction to Ben Affleck’s attitude at the Grammys?
Jose Roberto Landaverde Movie buff and music lover. I am fascinated by writing, listening, reading and commenting on everything related to the seventh art. I’m a fan of Rocky and Back to the Future and obviously one day I’ll climb the “Philly Steps” and drive a DeLorean. Faithful believer that cinema is the best teleportation machine, and also that on the big screen we can all see ourselves represented. I constantly, like Scott Pilgrim, ask myself: “Does bread make you fat?”
