As of its fourth installment, the successful action and spy film franchise starring Tom Cruise stopped numbering its films; instead he preferred to give them a unique title that would give them a certain cachet. At the beginning we had Ghost Protocol (Ghost Protocol) that had narrative justification, since it was the name of the contingency plan with which the President of the United States disavowed the entire Impossible Missions Force. However, after Christopher McQuarrie took over the directing chair for the four subsequent films, the titles became more ambiguous. And now the question is: why is it that the upcoming seventh and eighth installments of Mission Impossible respond to the name of Dead Reckoning?
Fortunately, McQuarrie himself has the answer and is not afraid to share it half a year before the release of film number seven in the saga. In a recent interview with Empirethe director and screenwriter on duty Mission Impossible specified the definition of “dead reckoning” and the meaning it will take on in the future adventures of intrepid agent Ethan Hunt.
“There are a lot of things that come out of Ethan’s past. The term ‘dead reckoning’ is a navigation term. It means you choose a course based solely on your last known position and that becomes quite a metaphor not only for Ethan, but for various characters,” he commented.
Curiously, the title in Latin America for the next films in the franchise —which will be part one and part two of the same story— was translated as deadly sentence; a term that suggests a greater fatality, while the name in English points to a dangerous scenario (for making estimates based on risky conjectures) but not necessarily lethal.

However, understanding the details of “dead reckoning” as a metaphor it won’t happen until we know more about the plot of the movies Mission Impossible on my way. And for the time being, Christopher McQuarrie assured Empire that such productions will surpass all previous installments; at least with regard to the size of the show that we will witness on the screen.
“The first thing we knew is that if it’s going to be a big two-part adventure, it has to be epic. It’s going to have to be the installment that swallows the rest of the franchise. There is no other way to do it,” shared the director also responsible for secret nation Y Repercussion.
