One of the most talked about aspects of ‘Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets’ is that at the end it was explicitly revealed that Dumbledore is homosexual and that he had a romantic past with Grindelwald. As well, that will not be seen in chinawhere Warner has eliminated the dialogues that made that clear to be able to release the film there.
Warner’s explanation
Specifically, only six seconds of the film have been eliminated to leave out the phrases “because i was in love with you” Y “the summer Gellert and I fell in love” uttered by the character played by Jude Law. It was evident that they were not going to be able to release ‘Fantastic Animals: Dumbledore’s Secrets’ in China with those two lines of dialogue and from Warner they justify their decision like this:
As a studio, we are committed to safeguarding the integrity of every film we release, and that extends to the circumstances that make nuanced cuts necessary to respond sensitively to various market factors. Our desire is to release our feature films around the world just as their creators did, but historically we have faced small cuts in local markets.
In the case of “Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets,” a six-second cut was requested and Warner Bros. agreed to those changes to meet local requirements, but the spirit of the film remains intact. We want audiences around the world to see and enjoy this movie, and it’s important to us that Chinese audiences have the opportunity to experience it as well, even with these little cuts.
The truth is that Warner’s movement neither has had the expected results in Chinawhere the film hasn’t even hit $10 million in its opening weekend when “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” debuted at the time with more than $36 million.
