Consolidated as an absolute success, Warframe has given us nine years of uninterrupted content to sneak in as one of the most popular titles in the industry. Now the study Digital Extremes wants to launch a new experience under the name of soul frame. A new free MMORPG with which to hit the table.
As revealed from The Washington Post, Steve Sinclair will change his role to director of the new project. Therefore, both games will share the focus on cooperative combat between player and environment with procedural scenarios. All of this in “the mirror universe version of Warframe“.
Judging from the opening cinematic, it looks like we’ve changed the futuristic, tech-heavy world to a version with more fantasy touches. “While Warframe focuses on shooting, this one focuses on melee. Where Warframe it’s super fast and with great speeds, this one is going to be much slower and heavier. But it still has a lot of similarities to the genre that we have experience with,” explains Sinclair.
One of the inspirations to shape soul frame has been Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke and The Neverending Story, so we can expect themes like nature, restoration, and adventure. In turn, the clash between industry and nature will be constant, with the world refusing to be occupied.
“The idea is that the world itself is a little bit angry about what’s been done to it, and the terrain below it tends to change throughout the day. So there will be procedural systems within cave and crevasse networks and so on under the world,” explains creative director Geoff Crookes.
Of course, we will find a mostly open environment, with special attention to exploration. One of the objectives is that you feel that in short game sessions the immersion is very high and that in turn you notice that the universe of soul frame it runs its course without you.
However, the team rules out that they want to follow the line imposed by FromSoftware in recent years, although they have not gone into detail about what differences really exist. Despite the fact that the first concepts began to emerge in 2019, only a small group of workers has been involved in the project until last February. It is expected that within a year some users can give it a try to the title.
Don’t fear the end Warframe. The work of Digital Extremes has no rope for a while and it has been confirmed that The Duviri Paradox expansion will arrive, in which we will control Drifter in an open world expansion.
