After a debate that lasted for long hours, finally the electrical reform of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador did not obtain the necessary votes.
The result of the vote was very close: 275 votes in favor and 223 against. The government needed a qualified majority of at least 333 supporters.
On the night of Sunday, April 17, the opposition deputies rejected AMLO’s energy reform.
The result is the first time that an initiative that has the support of Morena and its allies has failed.
The deputies of the PRI, PAN, PRD and MC voted against, preventing the 333 votes necessary to endorse the electricity reform from being reached.
At the same time, the door was left open to prevent other constitutional reforms from also advancing (electoral and National Guard reform) that AMLO had announced.
Among the notable data of the legislative day on Easter Sunday, it can be noted that the PRI member Carlos Miguel Aysa voted in favor of the reform and that the PVEM deputy, Andrés Pintos Caballero, voted against it.
Laura Fernández (PRD) was absent because she requested a license to compete for the governorship of Quintana Roo.
The debate began at 11 a.m. on Sunday and after a break at noon, it resumed at 3 p.m.
Voting took place in the evening. which ended with 275 votes in favor and 223 against.
After more than 12 hours of debates, and after the rejection of the initiative promoted by AMLO, a session was called for this Monday, April 18. There it is expected to raise a new initiative of the Executive, in this case for the nationalization of lithium.
It is expected to be uploaded to the plenary as an “urgent resolution” with the idea that it be voted on this Monday.
The reform sought to establish that at least 54% of the energy be managed by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), instead of the 38% that it currently manages, a scenario in which 62% of energy control is left in the hands of private companies and foreign companies.
AMLO’s opposition rejects the reform, among other things, because would generate a rise in gas emissions and an increase in the price of electricity. This is something that AMLO has denied.
Opposition also came from the United States, a country from which it is argued that the electrical reform project could harm your investments in Mexico.
“I already said it in my report on Tuesday: whatever happens we are already armored against betrayal. morning [por este lunes 18 de abri] I will explain it again”, AMLO published on his Twitter account, alluding to the fact that he has an alternative to the electrical reform.
I already said it in my report on Tuesday: whatever happens, we are already armored against treason. I’ll explain it again tomorrow.
