Volvo is entering a new era in its history. The Swedish brand is one of the first in Europe to seriously bet on electrification at the highest level, and has already confirmed that it will give a new opportunity to its sedans and family cars transformed into electric models. A more modern design will be the hallmark, but they also have one more ace up their sleeve.
Volvo is completely determined to be a benchmark in the Premium market for electric cars. The Swedish firm has big plans ahead in this matter of sustainable mobility at the highest level. The brand has started with an offensive in the compact segment, but is also working on models from the D segment onwards, confirming that the “S” and “V” series models will be renewed. This strategy means not doing without the traditional three-volume saloons, nor the familiar ones.
A decision of which they are fully convinced, despite the fact that SUVs are the reference. The truth is, in certain markets, there are still customers who have not succumbed to this phenomenon and prefer the more traditional models, for which Volvo will have an offer. Those from Gothenburg have never referred to the famous ‘Cross Country’, but with the XC range it looks like they will be the big losers in the new equation.
Volvo’s electric futures will stand out for power
The new generation of electric models will start with the arrival of the new generation of the XC60. The representative SUV in the D segment is in the middle of its life cycle in the market, so the new model will debut in 2024 and will do so with the Recharge seal. From there, the S60, V60, S90 and V90 will also undertake a radical transformation in design, which has already been anticipated that they will put aside the angular and straight lines, opting for softer styles.
A modern and minimalist style in the Swedish line. But It will not be the only weapon that the brand has up its sleeve. Henrik Green, Product Manager at Volvo Cars, was present at the “Dagens Industri Great Mobility Day” held in Stockholm, a special event in which he took the opportunity to reveal one of the secrets that will characterize the Volvo electric futures: power. Green has indicated that “Energy is something that can be obtained easily and economically in the electric future”, revealing that the new electric models that will arrive in 2022 they will offer up to 400 kW and, in a next step, will reach 500 kW.
Figures equivalent to 544 and 680 hp, respectively. Be careful, we are talking about Volvo, not Polestar, which will continue to be completely independent, but they are maximum figures that electric motors can deliver. Thus, depending on the model, these will be regulated to offer different versions and levels, with a single engine or two and all-wheel drive. A scenario that can bring Volvo back to the level of German brands. Now, it remains to be seen what battery technology they will implement, which will come as a result of the agreement with Northvolt and which promise high maximum autonomies and rapid recharging.
