- Viva Aerobus joins Volaris and confirms that it will fly from the Santa Lucia airport.
- With this decision, Viva Aerobus becomes the second airline to operate in the new Federal Government project.
- As part of its strategy, Viva Aerobus created an alliance with the Colombian airline Viva.
Viva Aerobus mentioned this day that, as Volaris announced yesterday, it will also be flying from Santa Lucia Airport.
Through a statement, Juan Carlos Zuazua, General Director of Viva Aerobus, affirmed that he is in constant communication with the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) in order to see and learn how the construction of the new Felipe Ángeles airport is evolving.
With this decision, Viva Aerobus is positioned as the second airline that has said that it will operate from Santa Lucía, one of the great projects of the Andrés Manuel López Obrador administration, which has been severely criticized for its viability.
To do this, the airline announced that it has entered into an agreement with the Colombian airline Viva, with which it will be offering flights from Mexico City to Bogotá.
“We are aware that these days the rates will be published to operate the airport and once the rates are public, we can define our itineraries, ”Zuazua explained at a press conference where he announced that, now, Viva Aerobus joins Volaris to operate on the Felipe Ángeles.
Yesterday, after Volaris announced its decision to operate from the new airport, it was reported in various media that its shares on the Mexican Stock Exchange fell by as much as 1.4 percent, linking four days down.
Since AMLO’s arrival to the presidency, the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) has been one of his strong cards, especially after the cancellation of the New Mexico City International Airport (NAICM).
However, in recent weeks there has been talk of the poor viability of this new airport, which, according to some specialists, will not be ready when the president anticipates it.
As a result, a couple of airlines have announced their decision not to fly from the Santa Lucia airport, a fact that undoubtedly represented a hard blow when it had not even started to operate.
To all this must be added the fact that users constantly complain about the distance they would have to travel to get to Felipe Ángeles and, in addition, the cost that this would entail. A few months ago, in that sense, an Uber user shared the cost of travel from Mexico City to Santa Lucia, reaching a price higher than the value of the tickets themselves.
Undoubtedly, there are more doubts than certainties regarding what will happen to AIFA and how it will operate for users, who, in fact, are the most interested and among them there is still a lot of uncertainty.
So far, what is known is that the new Felipe Ángeles International Airport will start operating from March of next year, the date on which it is also expected that both Volaris and Viva Aerobus, until now, will also start their routes.
Starting from this, these are important months for the Federal Government, after its recent controversies with the UNAM, its constant hitting with some businessmen and its upcoming revocation of mandate.
