Peru woke up today with a political crisis whose climax was the dismissal of Pedro Castillo as president and was later arrested when, allegedly, he was going to the Mexican embassy in Lima.
After Castillo ordered the temporary closure of the Peruvian Congress on Wednesday morning and decreed a curfew at night, legislators brought forward the session to promote a vacancy motion (removal) against Castillowhich was voted in favor by the majority.
With the Peruvian government and institutions against him, Castillo he left the Government Palace almost secretly and through the back door.
Castillo was arrested in a confusing incident that was widely circulated on social media. Surrounded by his presidential escort, it was made public that he had been dismissed and, as EFE was able to learn shortly after, heThe police officers who guard him arrested him and took him to the prefecture of Lima.
And a fact that has been widely commented on social networks was that Peruvian citizens blocked the street where the Mexican embassy is located in Lima, to prevent an eventual arrival of Castillo at the diplomatic building to request asylum.
After Castillo’s arrest, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard confirmed in a radio interview that citizens blocked access to the Mexican embassy due to a possible refuge for Castillo.
The secretary affirmed that the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador would be willing to grant Pedro Castillo asylum, although he has not requested it.
During the political crisis that Peru has experienced in recent weeks, López Obrador expressed his support for Castillo and even pointed out that the attempts to remove him were a matter of “racism.”
The Mexican president even said on November 30 that he would travel to Peru on December 14 to hand over the temporary presidency of the Pacific Alliance to the then Peruvian president, Pedro Castillo, in the midst of the political crisis in the South American country.
However, after Castillo’s arrest, Marcelo Ebrard said that López Obrador’s trip to Peru was cancelled.
