A volume of vehicles manufactured in Spanish territory that, compared to the previous year, represents a significant 7.5% drop. The year that we left behind just a few weeks ago has been marked by a shortage of microchips. Crucial components in the vehicle manufacturing process.
The global shortage of microchips has greatly affected activity in vehicle production centers. In addition, this registered decrease takes on greater importance if we take into account that, in 2020, for approximately two months, the factories were closed due to the restrictions imposed by public authorities to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
The microchip shortage will end in 2023
In the specific case of the month of December 2021 a total of 147,404 vehicles left the assembly lines, which is supposed to be a 25.1% retracement compared to the same period last year. The forecasts that are being considered in the sector point to 2023 as the year of the complete normalization of this situation of scarcity.
The analysis of the production by type of vehicles It allows to clearly discover how the volume of units manufactured in the Spanish facilities is distributed. In December, the production of cars and SUVs
reached 112,501 units, which translates into a decrease of 28.6%. The total production of passenger cars and SUVs in 2021 was 1,662,174 units, 7.7% less than in 2020.
The production of commercial and industrial vehicles December closed with 34,903 units (-11%) while the total accumulated for the year reached 435,959 copies, which represents a reduction of 6.8% compared to the previous year.

The manufacture of electrified vehicles continues to increase
In 2021 the factories scattered throughout our “old bull skin” have continued to increase the manufacture of zero and low emission vehicles, which contrasts with the drop with which the year ended. 11.6% of the total production quota was reached. Between January and December 2021, 242,380 units of electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, conventional hybrids and bifuel, achieving an increase of 47.1% compared to 2020. Despite this extraordinary result, the production of zero and low emission vehicles reported a notable drop of 20.4% in December with a total of 16,465 units.
On the other hand, electrified vehicles, which already have 17 models in production in Spain, have managed to increase their manufacturing share by 50%, reaching 9.3% of total vehicle production. In 2021, 194,936 units were produced, 39.3% more than in 2020. Of this volume, a total of 184,422 units corresponded to 100% electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. And with regard to December, electrified vehicles totaled 13,074 manufactured copies, 30.2% less than in the same month of the previous year.
Regarding other vehicles, the production of non-plug-in hybrids increased with 8,757 units in 2021 (+59.1%), just as LPG vehicles reached 20,548 units manufactured (+25.4%). On the contrary, natural gas vehicles reduced their production by 6.3% to 18,139 units respectively.
