Candlemas Day is coming and the winners of the Niñito Dios will have to pay their debt! Fortunately, there are more and more gastronomic options so that everyone can celebrate according to their tastes and ideologies. If you have decided to stop eating meat, for whatever reason, the Vegan tamale fair is for you.
This is the eighth edition of this fair that will be held from February 2 to 5 at the Monument to the Revolution in Mexico City. The event is organized by a cooperative work between the Vegan and Artisanal Bazar and the Government of Mexico City. Admission will be free from 9:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon.
As announced, in the Vegan tamale fair there will be more than 50 exhibitors from the Tláhuac, Xochimilco and Cuauhtémoc municipalities. There will also be tamales of all flavors –sweet or salty– with fillings such as mushrooms, chickpeas, nopales, huitlacoche, corn, mole, green chili, pineapple, raisins, soy, squash blossom, etc. Likewise, you will also find vegan canary seed, soy or almond atoles. They are very healthy, because they are free of lard!
Vegan tamale fair for Candelaria Day, what is celebrated?
Candlemas Day is celebrated exactly 40 days after Christmas -that is, on February 2- and it is because, on that day, the Virgin purified herself after the birth of the child God and brought candles to the Church so that these were blessed. This was the original celebration, however, at the time of the Viceroyalty it arrived in Mexico and the day of Candlemas coincided with the planting season that began on February 2 and was celebrated with exquisite tamales as the main dish. Did you know?
Origin of Candlemas Day
According to the anthropologist Katia Perdigón, on February 2 -Candelaria Day- the Virgin used to be the protagonist of the celebration, since it was exactly 40 days after Christmas, so the Virgin went to the Church to be purified and give thanks to God for the arrival of Jesus on Earth.
Since then, it has remained a custom to go to church every February 2, to thank the child God for bringing light to the hearts of humanity.
