The Zarcillo Awards were born in 1991 with a national character, and in 1999 the contest also became international governed by the rules of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) and integrated into the World Federation of Great International Wine and Wine Competitions. Spirits (VinoFed).
An internationalization that was a success, since in just three editions —between 1999 and 2003— the contest doubled the number of samples presented, as well as the quality of the wines. And now, from October 14 to 17, the city of Valladolid will host a new national and international edition of this wine contest organized by the Junta de Castilla y León with the aim of encouraging the production of superior quality wines, as well as their consumption in a reasonable way, make known to the public the types of characteristic wines produced in the various wine-growing areas, raise the technical and scientific level of the participating wineries and technicians, constitute a meeting point for the best wines in the world and contribute to the expansion of the wine culture.
Zarcillo Awards 2021
All the producing countries of the world can participate in the contest, according to the rules of the OIV. The wineries that want to participate in this edition may do so by sending the wine samples to the Castilla y León Oenological Station, until next October 8, which will be judged by a tasting panel made up of a hundred of the best tasters in the world. , to finally decide which will be the best wines of the 2021 edition with the Gran Zarcillo de Oro, Zarcillo de Oro and Zarcillo de Plata distinctions.
Regarding the evaluation of the wines, the Zarcillo Awards have an advanced computer program that allows the management of the complex sample reception system and a rigorous control of the data provided by the jurors during the tasting sessions. All this guarantees an adequate treatment of the information that allows the best wines to be awarded.
This year the contest presents a novelty, the incorporation of the Alejandro Fernández Zarcillo Trajectory Award category —in honor of the recently deceased winemaker and emblematic ambassador of the DO Ribera del Duero—, which will recognize a lifetime dedicated to viticulture.
