Vaccines save lives and are a great investment for public health and social development. This statement is not questionable, much less in times when we have been very vulnerable due to a global pandemic; Despite this, vaccination coverage in the country is at its critical point.
In Mexico, less than 20% of girls and boys under 1 year of age have a complete vaccination schedule; this being the worst percentage we have had in the last 18 years.
But why is it so important that girls and boys receive their vaccinations? The answer is very simple: they are more likely to survive, grow and develop healthy. In addition, vaccines are a great investment, because if we have a healthy population and fewer people who require treatment for diseases for which there are vaccines, we can ensure that families and society as a whole do not have to spend on treatments that allow them to recover their health. .
On the other hand, at not having the recommended coverage, the risk of outbreaks and resurgence of diseases is a latent threat that could be reflected in many human losses.
For this reason, from Save the Children we call for the government and institutions to assume the creation and execution of an Emerging Plan to Address and Revert the Lags in Vaccination, which includes objectives and achievable goals in the short term, with the purpose of increase the coverage of the complete vaccination schedule in girls and boys who do not yet have it.
I invite you to learn more about our Public Policy recommendations regarding the vaccination lag at: https://www.savethechildren.mx/rezago-en-los-esquemas-de-vacunacion/
Vaccination is a human right and must be guaranteed for all people, especially girls and boys!
