Goodbye to the phone plan?

Cinthya Morado is a user who has always had a postpaid plan, because she considered that it is better to have a fixed rate than to pay from time to time, but the inflationary situation is making her change her mind. For the user, connectivity is a priority service and that is why she -she assures- she will not leave her postpaid plan but she will migrate to a cheaper one so that the monthly payment is not so burdensome.

Guadalupe Jiménez is another consumer who joined this trend, assuring that last year she changed to a much cheaper rental plan, but not exclusively because of money, but also because she discovered that she had more megabytes and even only spent what she needed.

“There were times when you had a lot of data that you weren’t using and you had to pay for and it was a bit silly. By switching to a cheaper plan, I discovered the megabytes I need and, incidentally, it allowed me to save ”, he says.

Companies such as AT&T and Telefónica have promoted, since 2020, personalized postpaid plans so that users can choose the GB and social networks they need. This strategy, for example, has helped the company headed by Mónica Aspe in Mexico to increase its user base by 6.3% at the end of last year.

As of the third quarter of 2022, only 23.5% of consumers have a telephone plan.

Fewer recharges and more Wifi points?

Eight out of 10 mobile phone users currently opt for phone recharges, consolidating itself as the most relevant segment in the country, especially when there is a financial crisis.

Cindy Pantoja is a user who left postpaid last year to migrate to recharges and in this segment she found a solution in Telcel’s unlimited friend package.

“For my cell phone, I prefer unlimited plans according to my economy and more now that it is very difficult, sometimes I pay a full month (300 pesos) but sometimes I only pay 50 pesos, this depends a lot on unforeseen expenses and if my economy allows me allows,” he says.

For her part, Evelyn Díaz explains that her top-ups are becoming less frequent “I only add credit if it is strictly necessary, that is, if I need to send messages or even use GPS and lately I have been helped a lot by the (free) networks that are in the street and in the subway.

According to data from the consultancy The Ciu, users allocate an average of 89 pesos to top up airtime on their mobile phones and one of the biggest complaints that this segment has is the days of validity, although last year the balance payments of 20 to 30, 100, 150 and 500 pesos increased one day of validity.

CFE Telecomunicaciones e Internet para Todos has begun to densify WiFi hotspots on the streets of Mexico City so that users can connect for free. At the end of 2022 it had 33,000.

They will disconnect pay television

Restricted television was one of the telecommunications services that increased the most in 2022. Megacable increased its rates twice and Totalplay once, arguing that users would obtain higher speeds and because of the investments they made to densify fiber optic laying.

This situation has led Lorena Sánchez to cancel her subscription to her restricted television service, considering that it is “very expensive”.

“Pay TV service is very expensive. First I thought about canceling premium packages but I felt that it was not convenient, so now they prefer to look for series or movies online in sites that are called pirates”, assures the user.
