The United States Department of the Treasury has added several cryptocurrency addresses allegedly connected to the controversial Tornado Cash mixer to the Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC, Specially Designated Nationals list.
In an announcement made Monday, OFAC effectively banned United States residents from using more than 40 USD Coin (USDC) and Ether (ETH) addresses connected to Tornado Cash by placing them on its Specially Designated Nationals list. It is unclear what led to this control action, but the protocol was at the center of some recent hacks and exploits to DeFi projects, including a $375 million attack on Wormhole in February and a $100 million Horizon Bridge hack in June.
Tornado Cash announced in July that it had fully open sourced its user interface as part of its decentralization and transparency goals.
