USA will start using the artificial intelligence (AI) to combat the fentanyl trafficking towards the country, said this Friday the Secretary of National Security, Alejandro Mayorkas.
The official announced today the creation of a working group within his department to explore how this technology can be used to increase security in the country, including its uses to stop the fentanyl trafficking.
We will explore the different uses of this technology to better detect fentanyl shipments, identify and seize the flow of precursor chemicals, and locate the cores of criminal organizations to dismantle them.”
he detailed at a conference at the Washington-based Council on Foreign Relations.
Your department is also interested in exploring how you can use the AI to counter cybersecurity attacks by foreign agents, among which he mentioned China and Russia.
We must address the many ways that artificial intelligence will drastically alter the threat landscape and increase the tools we possess to succeed against these threats.”
Mayorkas stressed.
The consumption of fentanyl in the United States, a substance that left more than 100,000 deaths from overdoses in the country last year, has led the Joe Biden government to take measures to stop the entry of that substance.
Among them is the attempt to strengthen collaboration with Mexicowhom USA points out as one of the main countries through which drugs enter its territory.
The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has responded that the opioid overdose crisis is a public health issue that the United States must resolve and has even denied that fentanyl is manufactured in his country, arguing that this substance reaches North America from Asia.
In his 2024 budget bill, Biden has asked Congress for $46.1 billion for his anti-drug strategy.
