According to the White House, Jackson was watching the vote with Biden from the Roosevelt Room in the White House.

Presiding over the session was the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, who serves as President of the Senate, and who also made history by becoming the first African American and the first American of Indian or Asian descent to become Vice President of the United States.

Harris read the results of the vote with a smile and automatically the hemicycle erupted in applause.

The confirmation in the Senate of Jackson, who since last year has been a judge on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, was taken for granted because the Democrats alone had the necessary simple majority.

“This is a wonderful day, this is a day full of joy, this is a day that inspires,” Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said before the vote.

Schumer conjured up images of America’s children, who will soon be able to open their books at school and be inspired to see an African-American woman sitting on the Supreme Court.

Jackson’s arrival on the high court will not change its ideological makeup, as with six conservative-leaning justices and three progressive justices, it leans more to the right than at any time since the 1930s.

However, Jackson has a different experience than the rest of the justices. For example, she will be the first judge with experience as a public defender for people with few resources.
