For the eighth time this year, Apple He has launched a security update to fix a vulnerability zero day It affects your major operating systems and devices. So if you have an iPhone, iPad or Mac, feel free to update your software as soon as possible so that they are no longer exposed to a possible attack.

It is worth clarifying that, in the case of the iPhone or iPad, it is not necessary to install iOS 16 or iPadOS 16. Apple has also included the patch in versions 15.7 of said OS, so that you can choose which of the two you prefer when running the update. For macOS, the issue has been fixed with the release of versions 11.7 (Big Sur) and 12.6 (Monterey).

In the details of each of the aforementioned updates, Apple mentions that the bug has been reported by an anonymous researcher and identified as CVE-2022-32917. And the company stresses that it is aware of a report indicating that this vulnerability would have been actively exploited. However, it does not provide further details on possible attacks.

As indicated by those from Cupertino, the failure in question allowed an app to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. So don’t miss out on the opportunity to install updated versions of operating systems that already include the corresponding patch.

Devices affected by bug are all iPhone models from 6s onwards, iPod Touch 7th generation, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 4 and newer, iPad Air 2 and its successors, and all iPad models Pro. On the Mac side, the vulnerability affects all Macs compatible with Big Sur and Monterey.

Keep your iPhone, iPad and Mac up to date and protected

It is true that many users do not always prefer to update their devices to the latest version of an operating system. Especially those who have equipment that already has a couple of years of use. Sometimes it may be due to fear of stability problems, or simply because they do not believe that installing the latest will ensure too noticeable changes in performance or productivity.

However, it’s always important to stay up to date with security updates, whether it’s on an iPhone, Mac, or iPad. As for the most recent vulnerability detected in Apple operating systems, installing the patch is really easy. If you’re using a Mac, you can check for the Big Sur 11.7 or Monterey 12.6 update from System Preferences > Software Update.

For iPhone and iPad, you should go to Settings > General > Software Update. As we mentioned at the beginning, Apple will not force you to install iOS/iPadOS 16, but you can choose to stay on version 15.7, which also fixes the most recent vulnerability detected.

In any case, let’s not forget that iOS 16 will come with important news in terms of security updates. They will install faster thanks to Rapid Security Response, one of the features introduced at the last WWDC. This is because users will be able to choose to have security patches downloaded, without having to replace the entire operating system. A function that will not be exclusive to the iPhone, since it will also reach Macs thanks to macOS Ventura.
