This eye of the sea, also known as “the pool of Los Espinos”, is a crater lake that has formed over 17 million years, according to estimates.

The people of the region believe that this and the color of its waters are due to seawater, but due to the geographical location, there is no possibility, since there is no sea near this point in Michoacán. Biologists say that it may be due to the type of minerals, rocks and other elements in the region that influence the water to have such salinity.

Flora and fauna in Los Espinos

Since 2003, the 142 hectares of flora and fauna that make up this space were declared a Protected Natural Area, better protecting the ecosystem of capulín, willow, copal, nogalillo and bunting trees. Its fauna stands out for opossums, deer, foxes, wild cats and a wide variety of birds.
