    Unemployment rate in Mexico remains at 3.3% in October

    The unemployment rate in Mexico last October it remained at 3.3% of the economically active population (PEA), a figure equal to that of September and less than 3.9% of the tenth month of 2021, reported this Tuesday the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

    “The unemployed population was 2 million people and the unemployment rate (TD) was 3.3% of the EAP. Compared to the tenth month of 2021, the unemployed population decreased by 324,000 people and the TD was lower by 0.6 percentage points,” Inegi indicated in its report.

    The EAP for the tenth month of the year was 60.4 million people aged 15 and over, which represented a participation rate of 60.7% and an active population 1.7 million higher than that of October 2021.

    Of the EAP, 58.4 million people were employed during October, 2 million more than in the same month a year earlier.

    Underemployed people, that is, those who declared having the need and availability to work more hours, were 4.4 million, 7.5% of the employed population and a reduction of 1.9 million people compared to October 2021.

    By sectors and informality

    Workers in the informal sector in October totaled 32.4 million, which lowered the informality rate to 55.4%, some 0.2 percentage points less than a year earlier.

    The employed population by activity sector was distributed with 42.9% of the total in services, 19.8% in commerce, 16.3% in manufacturing, 12.1% in agricultural activities and 7.4% in construction.

    While in “other economic activities”, which include mining, electricity, water and gas supply, 0.9% were employed, and another 0.6% did not specify activity.

    By gender, the female EAP in October was almost 24.5 million and the male 35.9 million, with an economic participation rate of 46.5% for women of working age and 76.6% for men.

    The employment figures reflect the behavior of the Economy of mexicowhose gross domestic product (GDP) it grew from July to September by 0.9% quarterly and 4.3% year-on-year, with which it accumulates a growth of 2.9% in the first three quarters of 2022.
