The unemployment rate in Mexico stood last August at 3.5% of the population economically active (PEA)a figure lower than the 4.3% of the same month of 2021, reported this Tuesday the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
“The unemployed population was 2.1 million people and the unemployment rate (TD) was 3.5% of the PEA. Regarding the eighth month of 2021, the unemployed population decreased by 407,000 people and the TD was lower by 0.8 percentage points”,
indicated the Inegi in its report.
Even so, the August unemployment rate contrasts with the 3.2% reported by the statistics institute for the second quarter of 2022, based on the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE).
The EAP for the eighth month of the year was 59.7 million people aged 15 and over, which represented a participation rate of 60% and a population 1.5 million higher than that of August 2021.
Of the EAP, 57.6 million people were employed during August, 2 million more than in the same month a year earlier.
Underemployed people, that is, those who declared they needed and were available to work more hours, were 4.5 million, 7.9% of the employed population, a reduction of 2.7 million people compared to August 2021.
By sectors and informality
Workers in the informal sector in August totaled 31.9 million, which lowered the informality rate to 55.5%, 0.9 percentage points less than a year earlier.
The employed population by sector of activity was distributed with 42.6% of the total in services, in commerce 19.7%, in the manufacturing industry 16.9%, in agricultural activities 11.8%, and in construction 7.6%.
While in “other economic activities”, which include mining, electricity, water and gas supply, 0.8% were employed, and 0.6% did not specify their activity.
Of the total employed, 67.6% work as subordinate and paid workers, while 22.9% work independently or on their own without hiring employees.
For their part, 4.9% are employers and 4.6% work in businesses or family plots without monetary remuneration.
By gender, the female PEA in August was 23.7 million and the male 35.9 million, with an economic participation rate of 45% for women of working age and 76.8% for men.
The employment figures reflect the behavior of the Economy of mexicowhose gross domestic product (GDP) grew 0.9% quarterly in the second quarter of 2022 and 2% year-on-year, accumulating growth of 1.9% so far this year.
