The unemployment rate in Mexico decreased in the third quarter to 3.4% of the economically active population (PEA), a figure lower than the 4.2% of the same period of 2021, reported this Wednesday the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
A total of 57.4 million people were employed, 1.6 million more people compared to the same quarter of 2021″,
indicated the autonomous body in its report.
Even so, the unemployment rate from July to September is higher than the 3.2% reported by the statistics institute in the second quarter of 2022, based on the National Occupation and Employment Survey. (ENOE).
The EAP for the third quarter of the year was 59.5 million people aged 15 and over, which represented a participation rate of 59.9% and a population 1.2 million higher than that of July-September 2021.
Underemployed people, that is, those who declared having the need and availability to work more hours, were 4.6 million, 8.1% of the employed population, a lower percentage than the 12.9% in the third quarter of 2021.
By sectors and informality
The areas with the most interannual increases in employment were commerce, with an increase of 414,000 people, the manufacturing industry with 350,000, and various services with 293,000.
Workers in the informal sector in the third quarter totaled 31.9 million, which lowered the informality rate to 55.6%, some 0.7 percentage points less than a year earlier.
The employed population by activity sector was distributed with 62.2% in the tertiary or service sector, 24.9% in the secondary or industrial sector, and 12.3% in primary activities.
By gender, the female EAP from July to September was 23.65 million and the male 35.8 million, with an economic participation rate of 45.1% in women of working age and 75.6% in men.
The employment figures reflect the economic behavior of Mexicowhich grew 1% quarterly and 4.2% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022, with which it accumulates an annual increase of 2.7% so far this year.
