Jason deCaires Taylor creates impressive marine sculptures that live underwater. The artist recently presented his latest series, called Ocean Sentinels, with which he intends to pay tribute to scientists whose studies in the field of marine science and conservation have had a great impact on our understanding of reef ecology. The works are in the Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA), on the John Brewer reef (Australia).
“Each Sentinel of the Ocean is a complex synthesis of the human figure and natural marine elements that refers to the field of study and particular experience of the individual”.
— Jason deCaires Taylor, sculptor, ecologist and professional underwater photographer
The sculptures are hybrids with a synthesis of human figures and natural marine forms. The human figures are predominantly Australians recognized in the field of marine science and marine conservation, while the stylized marine forms that surround and envelop them represent their field of study and expertise.
The surfaces and shapes of the works are designed to be colonized by marine life that will change the appearance of the sculptures in vibrant and unpredictable ways.
