Long ago, Twitter revealed several monetization options that – to a greater or lesser extent – are already available. Among them stands out Tip Jar, a feature that allows you to send money to other users as a tip. The novelty is that this characteristic will soon work with Bitcoin too.
The leaker Alessandro paluzzi was the one who shared a screenshot of the alert that users who wish to receive the reward with cryptocurrencies will see. The funny thing is that Kayvon Beykpour, Co-Founder of Periscope and current Product Leader on Twitter, quoted the tweet and confirmed the initiative.
For now the details are scarce, but the screenshot in question allows to know how it would be part of the process. For tips with Bitcoin, Twitter plans to use Strike and the Lightning network. Logically, users who want to take advantage of this feature will have to connect their account on the social network with a cryptocurrency wallet.
It is not yet known when this feature will be available, or how many countries it will cover. Regardless of it, will be the first formal integration between Twitter and Bitcoin. This was something that was falling, taking into account the statements of Jack Dorsey. According to the CEO of Twitter, Bitcoin will be “the future” of the social network; It is therefore not surprising that part of their plan involves enabling cryptocurrency transactions.
Twitter will start experimenting with Bitcoin
Beyond the enthusiasm of Dorsey, who even hopes that Bitcoin is an instrument to achieve world peace, for Twitter it is still an experiment; and this also involves learning for the parties. On the one hand, the platform has in its hands a tool with the potential to change the modes of monetization online. But on the other hand, questions are also raised about what security measures are planned to prevent scams.
For now, the tool to send tips on Twitter continues to work with external “conventional” methods. Since its introduction last May, users can send money to their favorite tweeters through PayPal, Patreon, Bandcamp, Cash App, and Venmo.
Once support for Bitcoin hits Tip Jar, it wouldn’t be uncommon for Twitter’s next step to be add it to the Super Follow, which was formally launched yesterday.
