Sadly, a mass shooting took place in Buffalo, New York this past weekend. The person in charge was a young man of 18 years, who transmitted this event by Twitter, and arranged this plan through a private chat on Discord. Thus, these two companies have issued a statement on the matter.
Through an interview with CNNTwitch condemned such acts, mentioning that the transmission of this event, was eliminated in less than two minutes. This was what was said about it:
“We extend our deepest condolences to the victims and their families, and will do all we can to assist law enforcement in the investigation.
The user has been indefinitely suspended from our service and we are taking all appropriate action, including monitoring any accounts that re-broadcast this content.”
For its part, Discord also issued a statement where they regretted this eventand they plan to help the authorities in every possible way:
“We extend our deepest condolences to the victims and their families, and will do everything we can to assist law enforcement in the investigation.”
This incident is being investigated as a racially motivated attack. Before the attack, the person in charge published a document in which he pointed out his racist and anti-Semitic views. This information was shared on 4Chan, as well as a private Discord group.
10 people were killed and three more were injured in the shooting. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that an event of this type has been broadcast on Twitch, since in March 2019 the murders of 51 people in mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand were broadcast.
On related topics, Twitch has implemented a new reporting system. Similarly, the subscriptions of this platform unleash a new controversy.
Editor’s note:
It is very unfortunate that these types of events occur. While Twitch and Discord give us great freedom when it comes to connecting with friends and strangers, they are also platforms that can be misused, and we recently saw examples of this.
